Japanese Political History (1868-1955)

[Overview] The course explores the politics and government of the Meiji (1868-1912), Taisho (1912-26), and the early Showa period (1926-55). The lectures will discuss the development of a modern state system in Japan focusing mainly on the issues of domestic politics such as state-building, policymaking process, democratization, party politics, and social policies. Throughout the course, we will discuss the following themes: Who governed Japan? How were decisions made in Japanese policymaking process?
