Political Economy of Japan and East Asia

[Course abstract] This course will explore political economy of East Asian countries including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China. The course consists of two parts. The first part analyzes similarities and differences in the developmental paths and the systems of political economy in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China. It also reviews existing studies on East Asian political economy. The second part examines the recent development in the economic relations among those countries focusing on such areas as trade, finance, and regional integration. This course places emphasis on interaction among the instructor and students in class, and students are expected to actively participate class discussion.
